A conference for presenting the “Results of the reforestation project in Mounjiz” (Akkar) – 2nd of July 2018

A conference took place at the theatre Hall of St. Francis School in the village of Mounjiz on 2-7-2018 to present the main results of the EU-funded ARDAC project. This conference was organized by the Land and Natural Resources (LNR) program at the Institute of the Environment (IOE), University of Balamand (UOB).

A total of 55 participants attended the conference mostly from the local community of Mounjiz. Mayors from different municipalities in addition to representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Lebanese Army, deputies of the region, Non-Governmental Organizations, and local and religious authorities and agencies were also present.

The sessions of the event started by a welcoming note from the community of Mounjiz followed by an introductory talk about Mounjiz and the project given by Mr. George Youssef, the president of the Mounjiz Municipality. Next, Dr. Manal Nader, Director of the IOE-UOB thanked all the participants for their presence and acknowledged the solid collaboration and support of the local community and Municipality of Mounjiz. The community of Mounjiz, Mr. Youssef and Dr. Nader were all thankful to the European Union for funding the project and to the Ministry of Agriculture for its support and follow up on the project activities.

Dr. George Mitri, Director of LNR-IOE-UOB summarized all achievements of the project and provided an overview of the forest resource management plan which was developed by the team of the ARDAC project. This was followed by presenting the action plan for extraction of laurel oils provided by Dr. Sabine Saba, Director of the Environmental and Energy Economics (EEE) Program at IOE-UOB and team members of the ARDAC project including Maria Bou Nassar and Karen Gebrael. The conference was concluded by a premiere of a short video presenting the ARDAC project. Also the Municipality of Mounjiz presented horary shields to the European Union, the Ministry of Agriculture and the University of Balamand.

After the conference, all participants moved to visit one of the reforestation sites where 4500 seedlings of pine, carob and laurel were planted. On the site, the participants showed their appreciation about conducted work and the good growth performance of the panted forest tree seedlings. Finally, the attendees participated in a reception prepared at the backyard of Sayyidet al Miin church in Mounjiz.
